Kev & Nixxi

From 4 July 2009 to 20 April 2013, Kev Atkinson and Nicola “Nixxi” Rutherford turned Saturday nights on NE1fm 102.5 into a running world of new music, listeners, awful prizes, recurring characters, stupid radio and jokes that could come back years later.

The story of the show

Kev Atkinson and Nicola “Nixxi” Rutherford brought Kev & Nixxi to NE1fm 102.5 on Saturday 4 July 2009, taking over Saturday nights from 9pm to 11pm with new music, big dance records, listener chaos and the sort of conversations that could go spectacularly off course without warning.

Legend Tune put Kev and Nixxi head-to-head as listeners voted for the record that would open the following show. Alex Humberstone supplied Joke of the Week and plenty of other nonsense, while listeners increasingly became part of the programme through calls, messages, the website and later Interact. Over time SmeggHeads, iPhone Game of the Week, Return of the Track, themed specials and an increasingly dangerous Soundboard joined the mix.

The show was live, unpredictable and proudly daft. A broken studio could become the opening feature, an innocent listener message could derail half an hour, and a throwaway line could be waiting on the Soundboard the following Saturday. Regular listeners including Kyle Scott, Ryan 'Biscuit' Walker, Rob 'Beko' Ovens, Mustang, Emzy and Shawn Levy (1975-2026) found themselves pulled into games, arguments, competitions and whatever Kev and Nixxi had decided was important that week.

Music sat at the heart of it all. Kev and Nixxi mixed current pop and dance with trance favourites, older anthems and records they thought deserved to be heard, regularly championing new music before it became familiar elsewhere. The result was four years of Saturday-night radio that sounded like very little else on NE1fm, or UK radio in general.

The final regular edition, Show 198, aired on 20 April 2013. This site brings the surviving shows back together so they can be heard and explored again.
